This nineteenth century 'orjol' was originally used as a water pitcher - note the two handles and vertical spout, and in particular the wear to the bottom from years and years of pouring where the glaze and terracotta has worn away. Ewers like these were used for fetching water from the village fountain for domestic use. The emerald green glaze features a splash of ocher - a happy accident during the firing process. It is from south west France. A vibrant piece to add to a collection of antique French pottery.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
