This very large mantle mirror dates from the nineteenth century. It has a stunning, timeworn gilded frame with bevel edge. The frame's outer border has lovely egg-and-dart molding, an elegant carved band runs around the middle of the frame, while the inner border is carved with vegetal motifs. It retains the original mercury glass - note the sparkle effect in the glass. Minor losses to frame - refer to photos.
Due to its large size, this mirror would be best positioned on a mantelpiece (which is its traditional use). It would suit both busy interiors filled with bold patterns and statement pieces as well as minimalist-style rooms. Its lovely gilt and mercury glass features would juxtapose well with stone surfaces, such as marble, ceramic tiles, or brick.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
