This large antique tian bowl, likely from Biot and dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, is an exceptional example of traditional French pottery. Characterized by its pale yellow ochre glaze on the interior and unglazed exterior, the bowl’s natural light brown clay contrasts with the typical red ocher found in other regions. It features three handles and a pouring beak around the top. Note three small holes added to the bottom of the bowl, a modification likely made to accommodate a secondary use as a planter. Tian bowls, used primarily for baking and preparing dishes such as gratins, but also as a basin for washing vegetables and dishes - these vessels were essential in the daily lives of households.
The tian bowl has a long and storied history in Provence, particularly in pottery centers like Biot, Saint-Zacharie, and Aubagne. Tian bowls were typically crafted with glazed interiors to ensure a smooth cooking surface, while their exteriors were left raw or only partially glazed, as seen in this example. The book "Poteries d’Eaux" provides a detailed overview of the evolution and significance of these iconic vessels, which were originally designed for food preparation but also held ceremonial or communal roles in the past.
In terms of decorative use, this large tian bowl serves as a versatile statement piece. It could be displayed as a work of art in its own right, showcased on a kitchen island or sideboard, or used as a functional planter. Its warm, earthy tones and historic charm make it a perfect fit for rustic or Provençal-inspired interiors, offering both practicality and timeless beauty.
