Jean-Pierre Dolla, a native of Flayosc in the Haut Var, in 1946, in a family of winegrowers, became interested in painting very early on. Following his first master in the scrub-land of his native region, he learned to paint in the old-fashioned way, the easel installed in nature, light as a guide, the feelings of the moment necessarily living in the canvases.
Continuing his apprenticeship in Grenoble (at the Decorative Arts) then in Paris (at the Beaux Arts where he was a student in the Chapelain-Midi workshop), he was celebrated in 1971, receiving the Critics' Prize in his twenty-fifth year. (only Bernard Buffet was younger when he received this same distinction).
From then on, under contract with a Parisian gallery, he discovered and experienced the mysteries of the art market. Insubordinate, refusing to "paint by the kilometer" canvases all alike and to freeze his painting in its then evolution, he comes up against the financial realities of art as "something for sale". After 10 years, and a lawsuit won against his gallery owner, he regains his freedom.
In the meantime, having become a father, he rejoined "real life" and became the mooring vessel at Fos sur Mer. There, on the quays, he moored and unmoored gigantic tankers, thus supporting his family and guarding for his time of rest his need to create.
His painting, rubbing against the harshness of the working class world, becomes radicalized, materials and collages enriching his palette while more and more he abandons figuration to reach the shores of abstraction.
Passing through different stages and techniques, he ended up, at the turn of the 2000's, in a painting made of abstract landscapes of great strength, worked in both oil and watercolor and striking nudes by uncompromising expressionism, in oil and pastel.
At the dawn of his sixth decade, retired, he swarms again with ambition and pictorial desires, in the quintessence of an irreproachable technique and in the consciousness of a thoughtful, mature and, quite simply, remarkable creation.
