Dating from the early twentieth century, this pair of paintings are of couples flirting and drinking. In the first painting, the man is playing a lute to the lady, in the second they are sitting closely at a table drinking. The first painting seems to be signed in the bottom left, and are attributed to Fritz Mackesen (1866-1953) as there is an old handwritten label on the back reading "Fritz Mackensen,Bremer Presse,3 Tafeln, Signiert. Preis Worpswede 1919". Oil on wood (walnut). The gilded frames are of good quality, made with a keyed miter joint.

Fritz Mackensen, born on April 8, 1866, in Greene near Kreiensen, Duchy of Brunswick, was a prominent German painter associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting and Art Nouveau. He was a close friend of Otto Modersohn and Hans am Ende and co-founded the renowned artists' colony at Worpswede. Between 1933 and 1935, he served as the head of the Nordische Kunsthochschule in Bremen, which is known today as the University of the Arts Bremen. Mackensen passed away on May 12, 1953, in Bremen and was laid to rest in the Worpswede Cemetery.
