Rich in character and remarkable for both its sculptural presence and ingenious construction, this superb Genoese walnut cabinet dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. Entirely demountable, the piece was conceived as a traveling cabinet, assembled through a simple system of iron hooks and fittings rather than permanent joinery, allowing it to be transported and reassembled with relative ease.
The cabinet is beautifully crafted in richly grained walnut, whose warm tones and lively figuring are particularly enhanced by time and use. The façade is decorated with elegantly sculpted geometric panels that create rhythm and depth across the surface, while the robust proportions and architectural silhouette give the piece a stately presence. Inside are two shelves that pull slightly.
The piece remains in very good overall antique condition, with scattered traces of its past life that only add to its authenticity and charm, including a small loss to the front edge of the upper shelf and a charming rosette lightly carved into the top panel, likely traced by a child at some point during the cabinet’s long life. The doors still lock, although, as expected for a fully demountable piece of this age, the structure is no longer perfectly straight or tightly adjusted throughout. The walnut has developed a beautiful patina over centuries, further emphasizing the quality of the wood and craftsmanship.
Offering generous storage and a strong decorative presence, this exceptional Genoese cabinet would bring warmth, history, and striking old world character to a living room, dining room, study, or carefully curated interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
