This small giltwood mirror with parcloses dates from the late 18th century and is crafted in the Louis XIV style. The richly carved frame features intricate foliate motifs, accentuated by a well-preserved gilded finish that enhances its opulence. The mercury glass mirrors from the parcloses display a beautifully aged patina, while the central mirror is notably clearer and may have been replaced over time. The beveled parcloses, with their delicate wear, catch and reflect light in a particularly elegant manner.
A parclose mirror is a type of mirror that incorporates additional smaller mirrored sections within its frame. These secondary mirrors are usually separated from the main mirror by sections of the frame, creating a sort of windowpane effect. Mirrors with parcloses became fashionable in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially during the reign of Louis XIV, when the art of gilded woodcarving flourished in France. The use of mercury glass was a hallmark of high-quality mirror production during this period, offering a distinctive depth and shimmer that modern glass cannot replicate.
This exquisite mirror can seamlessly complement a range of interiors, from classical to eclectic spaces. When hung above a console or mantelpiece, it instantly becomes a striking focal point, reflecting light with an elegant flair. Its clarity also makes it an ideal addition to a bathroom. Pairing it with antique furniture enhances its historical character, while contrasting it with contemporary décor allows its intricate craftsmanship to stand out in a modern setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
