A superb, rare set of four matching Louis XVI antique French painted mirrors. The shape is decorated with a theatre-style elements featuring a gilded curtain and tassels on the top half and Grecian-style square scrolls at the bottom above the gilded carved wood corners. The decorative wood frame has been refinished to feature a light blue painted and gilded accents. These hail from a prominent homes private collection in the south of France.
Perhaps first used as paneling in an Hôtel Particular as pairs on either side of a room for symmetry, this set would make a lovely impact in any space particularly mirroring each other in a dining room or placed for congruence across multiple rooms. With their flat bases, they could rest on top of a console at an entry, or be hung easily on a wall.
Light wear.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
