An atmospheric painting of sailing boats by Louis Bissinger (1899-1978). It is signed and dated 1940 in the bottom right and is framed in a pretty gold frame.
In the Dauphiné region, Louis Bissinger befriended many Lyonnais painters, including Giacomini, Anselme, Abel Gay, Romagnol, Mademoiselle Soudan, and Reignier, sharing a mutual admiration for painter Ravier (1814-1895). He often signed his works as "Bérard" or "Régis Bérard." During the war, he was arrested on September 14, 1943, in Lyon and imprisoned at Montluc. He was later transferred to Compiègne and deported to Buchenwald on December 14, 1943.
While detained, he managed to create watercolors. After returning to France, he exhibited his works depicting the horrors of the concentration camps. He won the 1st Prize of the City of Lyon in 1945 and participated in many exhibitions. In 1950, he moved to Morestel and worked there until 1960. In 1954, he won the 1st Prize from the Friends of the Arts of Grenoble. In 1957, the French State and the Army Museum acquired several of his paintings. After spending time in various French regions, including Franche-Comté, Burgundy, Alsace, and Champagne, he moved to Brandonvillers in 1970. Louis Bissinger left behind a large body of work.
