A charming and highly atmospheric riverside landscape depicting a mill beneath a large stone bridge, possibly inspired by the landscapes of the Cévennes. Likely painted in the late-19th century, the composition feels strikingly modern despite its traditional subject matter. The bridge, mill buildings and riverbanks are treated almost as blocks of colour and simplified geometric forms, giving the painting a strong architectural rhythm and an unexpectedly contemporary balance.
The contrast between the pale stone arch, dark wooden buildings and flowing water creates a graphic composition full of depth and atmosphere. The soft muted palette and slightly naïve perspective lend the work great poetic charm, while the confident brushwork captures the movement of water and changing light with sensitivity.
The work appears to be executed on paper laid down on canvas, and small tears and surface irregularities visible in places further reinforce its age and delicate character. The reverse, with its old newspaper backing and visible mounting structure, adds another evocative layer to the history of the piece.
Presented in an elegant antique gilt frame with restrained ornamentation, the painting displays beautifully despite some old restorations and retouching visible to the frame. Altogether, it remains a wonderfully decorative and evocative piece.
