This finely carved boiserie mirror, dating from the late Louis XIII or early Louis XIV period at the end of the 18th century, features an ornate wooden frame adorned with floral motifs and a delicate "rais-de-cœur" pattern. The original gilding has aged gracefully, revealing the rich patina of the wood beneath. The mercury glass mirror, heavily foxed with hand-beveled edges, showcases the unmistakable charm of centuries-old craftsmanship. Minor breaks and imperfections, typical of such an antique piece, only enhance its inherent charm, adding to its timeless character.

During the transition from the Louis XIII to Louis XIV period, mirrors became increasingly elaborate, reflecting the growing influence of Baroque aesthetics. The richly carved details and classical motifs seen in this piece exemplify the refined yet architectural approach to ornamentation typical of the era. Mercury glass was a luxury at the time, prized for its luminous quality despite natural aging effects such as oxidation, which now lends it a distinctive antique allure.

This mirror is ideal for adding an authentic historical touch to a classic or eclectic interior. Its aged gilding and aged glass make it a compelling statement piece, whether placed above a fireplace, integrated into a paneled wall, or juxtaposed with modern elements for contrast. The depth and texture of the patinated surface bring warmth and soul to any space, evoking the grandeur of 17th-century French interiors.
This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
