A small folk art wall mirror with a hand-worked repoussé metal frame mounted over a carved wooden backing, probably Spanish or Mexican, mid-20th century. The thin sheet metal has been pressed and chased with stylized vegetal and shell-like motifs, forming an animated silhouette with a small crest above the mirror. This repoussé metal skin is applied over a shaped wooden base, which gives the piece its sculptural outline. The lively profile and embossed decoration reflect a long tradition of devotional and domestic metalwork found both in Spain and across colonial Latin America. The carved wooden support retains traces of original red and green paint visible along the edges and inner surround, adding warmth and color beneath the metal overlay.
At the center sits a small square mirror plate that is largely desilvered, revealing warm undertones beneath and creating a softly mottled, atmospheric surface. Small nails and folded seams remain visible where the metal sheet is fixed to the wooden base, revealing its entirely hand-assembled construction. The overall surface has developed a mellow patina that enhances the piece’s rustic charm and folk character.
Such mirrors were typically made as humble decorative objects for homes, chapels, or devotional corners. Today it reads as a charming sculptural accent, bringing texture, patina, and a touch of folk character to a wall. Its irregular outline and mellow surface make it especially appealing in layered interiors where handcrafted objects and aged materials are appreciated.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
