This pair of mid-19th century Italian candlesticks, carved from wood and finished with green paint and gilding, originates from Genoa, Liguria. Salvaged from church boiserie, their design includes acanthus leaf scrollwork and a gadrooned body, evocative of he shape of a Medici urn, blending functionality with a refined historical aesthetic. Losses and wear as seen in photos.
Note that only the front faces are gilded - this was common for church decor as gold leaf was an expensive material, so only the side facing the congregation needed to be gilded.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
