This pair of lovely English Edwardian carved wood wall sconces date from the early twentieth century and are finished with a white patina and grey slate tops. These wall consoles present a Robert Adam-style design through the use of symmetric, Neoclassical elements including a carved garland of laurel garlands draped across the fronts. Robert Adam (1728 – 92) was one of the most important British architects working in the Neoclassical style – a movement in the decorative and visual arts that drew inspiration from the 'classical' art and culture of Ancient Greece and Rome. Laurel was traditionally used to weave wreaths and crowns as symbols of victory in the sporting events of ancient Greece.
Note also the lovely white patina and the floral carvings decorating the upper platform. In contrast to the dark and ornate furniture of the Victorian era, Edwardian furniture was much lighter and saw a shift towards light colors, pastel shades, and floral designs. This pair would be a delightful addition to any foyer or interior space.
