About Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779):
Anton Raphael Mengs was born on March 22, 1728, in Aussig, Bohemia, which is now Ústí and Labem in the Czech Republic. He emerged as one of the leading artists of early Neoclassicism. Mengs received his early education from his father, Ismael Mengs, in Dresden before continuing his studies in Rome. He later became a painter to the Saxon court in Dresden in 1745 and was celebrated for his portrait work, often in pastel, showing a remarkable ability to achieve rich coloring and a lustrous effect similar to oil painting.
Mengs' work was pivotal in transitioning from Rococo to Neoclassicism. His frescoes, such as 'The Apotheosis of Saint Eusebius' and 'Parnassus' at the Villa Albani, are noted for their classical restraint and became a sensation, advancing the Neoclassical movement. Besides painting, Mengs was also an articulate theorist who wrote on art in several languages, advocating for a blend of classical design with expressive elements from other renowned artists like Raphael, Correggio, and Titian.
In the 1760s, he worked in Madrid under the patronage of Charles III of Spain, where he produced notable works like the ceiling of the banqueting hall in the Royal Palace of Madrid. Despite his success, Mengs died in poor circumstances in Rome on June 29, 1779, leaving behind a legacy as a precursor to Neoclassical painting and a significant figure in European art history. His theoretical insights and his artistic endeavors were influential in shaping the Neoclassical aesthetic that dominated European art at the time. His connections with notable figures like the art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann further underscored his historical significance.
