This striking ceramic vase from Vallauris is signed Jean Gerbino (1876–1966), a pioneering French ceramicist celebrated for his patented terres mosaïquées technique. Developed in the early 20th century, this method involves assembling colored clays to create intricate, mosaic-like patterns embedded within the ceramic body itself, rather than applied on the surface. Gerbino’s work was widely exhibited and is highly regarded for both its technical innovation and decorative refinement.
The vase displays this signature technique in a particularly dense and rhythmic composition, with a richly textured field of interwoven colored fragments in tones of green, terracotta, cream, and muted blue. These are contrasted by structured horizontal bands featuring stylized geometric and floral motifs, lending balance and clarity to the overall design. The elegant form, with its rounded body and slender neck, enhances the visual harmony of the piece. A discreet, old restoration is present at the neck, barely visible and not detracting from the overall appearance.
A highly decorative and collectible work, exemplifying the ingenuity and artistry of Vallauris ceramics in the mid 20th century. A similar example is available here, forming a harmonious near pair ideal for flanking a mantel or console.
