A classic Provençal two-drawer red-painted walnut sauteuse commode dating from the mid-eighteenth century. Hailing from the region between Arles and Aix-en-Provence, this commode features iconic curvy Louis XV cabriole legs adorned with acanthus leaves and carved side panels.
The walnut was painted using gilded accents beneath its Provençal coral-red colored body. The curved grey marble top is original and shows traces of restoration. The decorative bronze hardware featuring swirling acanthus leaves makes a striking contrast to the red painted walnut.
This curiously named "sauteuse" style of commode always features two drawers perched on high legs, which gives the amusing impression that the chest of drawers is ready to jump (or sauter, the French verb for "to jump"), like a frog. The piece's shallow drawers make it perfect for an entryway. Note the detail photo showing exposed wood represents the wood hidden under the marble top and does not detract from the beauty or functionality of the piece.
