This exquisite handmade terracotta Santon from Marseille portrays a man dressed in traditional white attire with a red sash, carrying a sack over his shoulder. Each detail is carefully hand-painted, reflecting the rich heritage of Provençal nativity scenes. There are 27 of these figures available, which can be purchased individually or as part of a curated collection.

The tradition of Santons, or “little saints,” began during the French Revolution, a time when public nativity displays were banned. Artisans in Provence started creating small figurines that allowed families to depict the nativity at home. Over time, these crèches evolved to include not only biblical figures but also villagers, farmers, and local tradespeople, celebrating the spirit of Provençal life. Every Santon is meticulously crafted by hand, making each piece a unique expression of regional culture and craftsmanship. This figure of a man with a sack is a testament to the hardworking spirit of Provence, bringing authenticity and warmth to any holiday display.
