This endearing handmade terracotta Santon from Marseille features a brown cow quietly resting, a peaceful figure that adds warmth to any nativity scene. Hand-painted with natural colors and fine details, this piece is a beautiful example of Provençal artistry from the late 19th to early 20th century. There are 27 of these Santons available, making it possible to acquire them individually or as part of a collection. Santons, or "little saints," are deeply rooted in the Christmas traditions of Provence. Developed during a time when public nativity displays were banned, these small figures allowed people to bring the story of the nativity into their homes. Over the years, Santons have grown to represent not only biblical characters but also the essence of rural Provençal life, including local animals and villagers. This resting cow brings a gentle, rustic charm to holiday decor, embodying the spirit of pastoral life and the timeless tradition of Provençal nativity scenes.
This piece is also available to purchase as part of a set here.
