This tan-colored brique chauffeuse from the late 19th century is an exquisite example of functional Provençal pottery. Crafted from oven-proof terracotta, it features two circular openings, allowing for easy handling and transfer of heat. Traditionally, this type of chauffeuse would be heated near a fire or in a slow combustion stove and then placed under bed covers to provide warmth throughout the night.

Sourced from one of Lambesc’s oldest homes, this piece captures the rustic ingenuity typical of Provence’s historical domestic items. Similar examples can be seen in Terres de feu, de lumière et de Songes by Henri Amouric, Lucy Vallauri, and Jean-Louis Vayssettes, illustrating its cultural significance in the Midi region of France. This is the third in a matching set of such pieces, ideal for creating a cohesive collection of French provincial artifacts.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
