Large stormy Paris streetscape 1949 R. Raimbault 26½" x 38¼"

Dated 1949, this large stormy streetscape is full of atmosphere. Storm clouds are gathering above, blocking the sunlight, and chimneys are billowing out dark smoke into the skies. People are walking down the street with heads lowered and there is a horse-drawn carriage in the middle of the street.

The perspective is very wide, yet there are no subjects in the foreground, creating a sense of people walking along an infinitely long road. Most likely Paris as the artist R. Raimbault is known for his scenic Parisian paintings - it is unsigned.

The frame would have been fabricated in the 1940s, notably using timber which is much older than the painting.
