This large Louis Philippe mirror showcases a striking striped pattern on its frame, accentuated by gold leaf applied over a red 'bole' undercoat, imparting a warm, rich luster. The 'bole' is a fine red clay used in the gilding process, serving as a base that enhances the brilliance of the gold leaf. This traditional technique, dating back centuries, involves applying layers of gold leaf over the bole, which allows for burnishing to achieve a polished sheen.

Note: An intriguing feature of this mirror is the oval stamp located inside the glass towards the top right, believed to be from the glass manufacturer, adding a unique touch to its historic charm.

The Louis Philippe period, spanning from 1830 to 1848, is characterized by its emphasis on simplicity and elegance in decorative arts. Mirrors from this era often have rounded corners and minimal ornamentation, focusing instead on refined shapes and luxurious finishing materials like gilding, in contrast to the preceding ornate styles. This period marked a move towards understated yet sophisticated design, aligning with the bourgeois values of the time.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
