This large 19th-century terracotta orjol from the Languedoc region, specifically Montpellier, is a fine example of traditional water-carrying jars used to transport water from village fountains. The jar features two robust handles, designed for easy carrying, and is adorned with a beautiful green glaze that has gracefully dripped across the body, adding a touch of color to its earthy tones.
A distinctive decorative element known as “décor d'arceaux imprimés à la roulette” (arc decorations imprinted with a wheel) can be seen etched in relief on the surface, a hallmark of Montpellier pottery. These imprinted arcs were both functional and decorative, adding texture and visual interest to the jar’s rustic design.
The Orjol and Dourque jars have a rich history in the Languedoc region, particularly associated with Montpellier. These vessels, used primarily for carrying water from village fountains, differ from the typical "cruche" by their side handle and additional functional design elements. The term Orjol appears in Languedoc literature as early as the 14th century, with the design becoming well-established in the 17th century.
This orjol is an authentic piece of French rural history, embodying the simplicity and practicality of 19th-century life while showcasing the local craftsmanship of southern France. Its raw terracotta body, paired with the natural green glaze, creates an aesthetic that’s perfect for rustic or Provençal-inspired interiors. Whether used as a decorative accent or a functional piece, this jar brings a sense of history and craftsmanship to any space.
