This large 19th-century Italian ceramic vase is richly decorated in the style of Renaissance Urbino majolica. Featuring an elegant ovoid shape on a pedestal base, it is adorned with two impressive handles in the form of satyr heads, from which sinuous serpents emerge, adding a dramatic sculptural quality to the piece. The body is meticulously hand-painted with two biblical scenes, one of which appears to depict Lot fleeing the destruction of Sodom, while the base is encircled by a geometric frieze reminiscent of ancient motifs. The intricate detailing and vibrant palette of blues, greens, and ochres are characteristic of the historic majolica tradition. A notable detail that underscores its handcrafted nature is the slightly uneven mouth, a charming imperfection that speaks to the artisanal quality of the piece. Rather than precise uniformity, this subtle irregularity highlights the human touch in its creation, emphasizing the skill and individuality of the ceramicist.

The majolica of Urbino reached its artistic peak during the Renaissance, prized for its refined tin-glazed pottery depicting mythological and historical narratives. Workshops in Urbino, such as those of the Fontana and Patanazzi families, became renowned for their sophisticated compositions inspired by classical antiquity and contemporary engravings. This 19th-century example pays homage to that legacy, mirroring the grandeur and storytelling prowess of its Renaissance predecessors with remarkable craftsmanship.

Today, a vase of this scale and visual impact makes a striking decorative statement. Placed on a console table, it can serve as a focal point in a classical or eclectic interior. Whether displayed as a standalone sculptural object or used to hold dried arrangements, its dramatic form and historical iconography lend an air of sophistication and depth to any space. The timeworn patina further enhances its antique character, making it a compelling piece for collectors and admirers of Italian majolica.
