This striking 17th-century octagonal Tuscan mirror is a rare and characterful piece, showcasing the elegance and individuality of made-to-order craftsmanship. The tiered molded frame is richly adorned with finely detailed foliate motifs, hand-painted in bold hues of deep red and ochre yellow that bring warmth and vibrancy to the design. A delicate beaded inner border frames the original mercury glass, creating a refined transition between the intricate decoration and the softly foxed and crackled reflective surface.

What makes this mirror especially intriguing is its asymmetrical construction—subtle yet deliberate—suggesting it was designed to be viewed from a specific angle, likely in a niche or against an inclined wall. This quirk is a testament to the bespoke nature of furniture and decorative objects of the time, when each piece was crafted to suit its exact placement. Beyond its historical appeal, this detail invites conversation and adds a touch of personality, distinguishing it as not just a mirror, but a thoughtful expression of 17th-century Tuscan interior design.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
