This large 19th-century water jug from the Basque Country (Southwestern France) features an elegant, rounded form with a rich, glossy green glaze that has aged beautifully over time. It retains its original lid, secured by a delicate chain, and is topped with a small, practical finial*. The gracefully curved rope twist handles showcase a finely executed design, characteristic of traditional earthenware craftsmanship from the region.

Such ceramic jugs were commonly used to store and pour water, benefiting from their glazed surface to preserve freshness. The region has a long-standing tradition of pottery, with artisans producing functional yet aesthetically refined pieces in tones that often reflected the surrounding natural landscape. This particular glaze, a deep and vibrant green, was popular in rural homes, where it brought a touch of color to everyday life.

Today, this striking jug can serve as a statement piece in a rustic or eclectic interior. Placed on a farmhouse dining table or a kitchen counter, it offers a glimpse into 19th-century provincial life while doubling as a sculptural element.
