A substantial copper jam pan from the late 19th or early 20th century. Hand worked in heavy gauge copper, it features broad gently curved sides, a flat base, and a well rolled rim that lends visual strength. Two cast brass handles are firmly secured with three large copper rivets each. The interior remains unlined, as is traditional for jam pans. The copper shows a warm rosy glow with soft caramel undertones, while the brass has mellowed to a soft golden matte. Condition is very good, with scattered shallow dings from kitchen use and light surface marks that read as honest wear.
This wide shallow form was designed to encourage quick evaporation, allowing fruit and sugar to cook evenly without scorching. Copper’s superb conductivity provided the responsive heat long favored by farmhouse cooks and pastry chefs alike. The rolled rim and hand riveted handles reflect traditional craftsmanship and recall the well used cookware that once hung in country kitchens during jam making season.
Generous in scale yet nicely proportioned, it invites display on a pot rack, open shelf, or country house table. Style it as a sculptural centerpiece filled with citrus, artichokes, or seasonal branches, or hang it flat against a stone wall where its luminous patina can catch the light and bring a quiet note of French authenticity to the room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
