A rare glazed terracotta “Galet calorifique” medallion from France dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Painted with a classic pale yellow glaze and stamped at the center and around the sides, this piece was later evolved to be known as a “médaillon digestif”. According to an observation and an ancient medical practice, heat favored digestion and stomach aches. After being warmed by the fire, this medallion could aid in serving these purposes and was mainly used by women. Today, it would add a charming decorative French touch to any kitchen wall with its convenient hole and string.
