This large, handsome glazed terracotta walnut oil jug from the early 19th century originates from the Perigord region in southwestern France. It features three handles, a pouring spout, and is covered in a beautiful dark green glaze with a distressed finish that contrasts with light undertones. Vertical raised bands around its gently rounded body, deep grooves on the handles, and thumb-sized pressed finger marks at their base add unique craftsmanship to the piece.
The surface has aged gracefully, with chips, scuffs, and indentations that tell the fascinating story of its life in a French country home. The glaze has worn over time, revealing white spots that contrast beautifully with the dark green finish, giving the vessel a striking yet harmonious appearance. With its striking texture and contrasting colors, this jar makes a captivating centerpiece on a rustic dining table or a statement piece on a mantel. Note the bottom has been pierced: place a container inside to use it as a vase for fresh floral arrangements.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
