Large Directoire Period Mirror W/ Giltwood Frame & Mercury Glass - 59½" x 32¾"

This large Directoire-period (1795 - 1800) mirror is entirely original, featuring its authentic mercury glass in two sections set within a classic giltwood frame. The elegantly reeded molding reflects the refined austerity characteristic of the Directoire style, with clean lines and subtle ornamentation. The surface of the aged mercury glass displays a charming atmospheric speckling, adding depth and character to its reflective quality.

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, mercury glass mirrors were highly prized for their luminous clarity and craftsmanship. The Directoire period, which bridged the grandeur of Louis XVI and the opulence of Empire, favored restrained yet sophisticated decorative elements. Mirrors from this era were often produced with two glass panels due to the technical limitations of creating large sheets at the time, making this piece a fine example of period craftsmanship.

This mirror makes a striking statement above a mantel, leaning against a wall in a living space, or incorporated into a refined entryway.
