Dating from the late-nineteenth century, this lovely preserving pot would have originally been used for jam, olives etc. It is numbered with the size '2' underneath. It is glazed inside and out but not underneath with pretty yellow and brown mottled glaze that is evocative of spotted animal fur.
Pottery in Dieulefit, a town in southeastern France, boasts a history dating back to the Middle Ages, thanks to the region's high-quality clay. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Dieulefit became known for its functional wares like jars and bowls, decorated with rustic Provencal designs. The 20th century saw a revival, with artists innovating new forms and glazes while honoring traditional methods. This blend of historical craftsmanship and artistic experimentation has cemented Dieulefit's reputation in the world of ceramics.
