André Legallais, born in 1921 on rue Félix Faure in Le Havre, France, came from a modest background with his father working as a gardener. Leaving school at twelve, he became a house painter while attending the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Le Havre for three years. After World War II, he traveled extensively in Europe, drawing inspiration from Flemish painters in Bruges and contemporary artists in Ostend. He also explored primitive painters in Spain and Italy.
Legallais's work is characterized by his use of building paints, which allowed him to experiment with colors and nuances. He painted still lifes, landscapes, and industrial scenes, particularly of the port of Le Havre.
