Albert Thiry, born in Nice in 1932, was a prominent figure in mid-century French ceramics, known for his functional yet artistic creations. He established his atelier in Vallauris in 1961, leaving behind a legacy that reflects the region's rich ceramic tradition. Vallauris, a historic pottery town on the French Riviera, has been celebrated for its ceramics since Roman times, thanks to its rich clay deposits and water resources.
By the 18th and 19th centuries, it was known for durable, earth-toned kitchenware in browns, greens, and ochres, reflecting the region’s natural beauty. In the 20th century, Vallauris gained international fame when artists like Pablo Picasso and Jean Marais brought new creative energy to the craft. Picasso, who lived there from 1948 to 1955, revolutionized Vallauris pottery by blending art with function, producing expressive and innovative pieces. Today, Vallauris remains renowned for its culinary ceramics, valued for both practicality and artistic flair, embodying a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
