Chinese glory box - 19th century - 22½"

Dating from the nineteenth century, this Chinese hope chest or glory box was originally filled with useful items (such as silk and linens) in anticipation of married life. Made from exotic wood with some gilding. It is decorated with birds and floral motifs. The inside is very smooth to ensure that the stored items are protected and don't catch on any splintered edges. In unrestored, timeworn condition.
