This superb bronze sculpture of a stylized walking panther dates from the mid-twentieth century and is in the Art Deco style. Signed Alexandre Zankoff (1900-1982) and stamped by the Marcel Guillermard (1887 - 1966) foundry. It is attached to a black marble base which has some light wear and losses - refer to photos.
About Alexandre Zankoff (1900-1982) Zankoff was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1900. He was the son of politician Kristo Zankov and brother of revolutionary Georges Zankov. He trained at the Academy of Arts in Florence, and also in Rome, completing his studies in 1927. He moved to France for five years and was an apprentice of Émile-Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929). Bourdelle was a student of Rodin and teacher of Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti. In the 1930s he returned to Bulgaria. Some of his works are displayed at the National Gallery of Sofia. He also created public monuments in Bulgaria during the 1930s and 1940s. He died in Bulgaria in 1982.
