This beautiful Art Deco vase by Jean Gerbino (1876-1966) from Vallauris exemplifies the striking Neriage technique that became his hallmark. Inspired by Japanese ceramics, Gerbino perfected this method by skillfully layering and blending colored clays to create intricate mosaic-like patterns, achieving a richly textured, multicolored effect without the use of paint or glaze.

The vase’s rounded form is elegantly framed by three gracefully curved handles and a wide flared rim, finished in a soft blue glaze that contrasts beautifully with the intricate marbled body. A rare frieze of sirens encircles the central band, their flowing forms rendered with delicate precision against a subtle wave-like background, enhancing the piece’s dynamic visual rhythm. Above and below, meticulously arranged earth-toned mosaics further highlight Gerbino’s technical mastery.

A Sicilian-born ceramist who settled in Vallauris, Gerbino revived and refined the ancient terres mêlées technique, elevating it to new artistic heights during the Art Deco period. Vallauris, long celebrated for its pottery tradition, became a hub for innovative ceramics, attracting luminaries such as Picasso in the mid-20th century. This vase, distinguished by its rare siren motif, stands as a testament to Gerbino’s visionary craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of Vallauris ceramics.
