This beautiful late 19th-century "conscience" jar from the Southwest of France features a striking green-flamed glaze with ochre and yellow accents. Its rounded form is adorned with six sturdy handles, complemented by old rope, which adds to its rustic charm. The rich, glossy glaze and the artisanal craftsmanship make it a remarkable example of traditional French pottery.

The "conscience" jars were historically used by monks who travelled from house to house collecting olive oil to support the poor. These vessels received their evocative name as each household gave oil according to their conscience. Their distinctive design, featuring multiple loop handles for threading rope, facilitated easy transport.

With its superb glazing and timeworn character, this piece brings warmth and authenticity to any space. Perfect for a kitchen, it can be displayed on a countertop or shelf as a striking decorative touch. It also serves beautifully as a sculptural element in a rustic or Mediterranean-inspired interior, celebrating both history and craftsmanship.
