Antique Quimper candlestick - Virgin Mary w/ child 13½"

A sculptural Quimper candlestick from the early-nineteenth century representing the Virgin Mary with child. Made of polychrome earthenware, it still retains much of its richly colored painted decoration. A candle can be displayed in Mary's crown.

Quimper is a French town in Brittany that is famous for colorful earthenware. Ateliers have been producing ceramics in Quimper since the seventeenth century due to the close proximity to rivers.
