This 19th-century ceramic vessel, known as a "conscience," is a typical object from Provence. It features a smooth cream-colored glaze and two small handles on each side, intended for attaching a cord for transport. Topped with an antique cork stopper, this vessel exudes rustic charm and authenticity.
Dating back to around the 1400s, these vessels were used by mendicant monks who traveled from house to house in Provence, collecting olive oil for the poor. The precious liquid was gathered in these jars, with ropes passing through the handles, allowing the bottles to hang from the sides of their donkeys. Each household would donate according to their “conscience,” giving the vessel its name.
Its timeless and elegant design as well as cultural significance make it a captivating addition to any home.
