This is a small, handcrafted water whistle shaped like a miniature jug, typically produced in Aubagne from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
The jug features a rounded, bulbous body with a gracefully arched handle extending from the top. The spout, slightly angled, is positioned on the side of the jug and left unglazed at the tip, which contrasts nicely with the rest of the glossy green-glazed surface. The piece sits on an unglazed terracotta pedestal base, enhancing its artisanal character. The exterior of the jug is glazed in earthy green tones with slight variations, while the unglazed portions, including the base and spout, reveal the natural clay.
To function, water is added to the jug, and when air is blown through the spout, the water modulates the sound, turning the jug into a playful musical whistle.
