This exquisite 19th-century tobacco box, crafted from rosewood veneer (placage en palissandre), is an elegant piece that reflects the refinement of a bourgeois home. The box features two compartments with separate lids, possibly designed to store different varieties of tobacco. Note that it is labeled "Tabac" on the front in delicate marquetry, adding a personalized and artistic touch to its design. The interior is lined with Carrara marble, a thoughtful feature that served a practical purpose beyond its aesthetic appeal.
Marble was used to line tobacco boxes like this because it helped regulate temperature and humidity, essential for preserving the quality and flavor of the tobacco. The stone's natural cooling properties prevented the tobacco from drying out or becoming overly moist, ensuring an optimal smoking experience. Additionally, marble's non-porous surface resisted odors and stains, maintaining the purity of the stored tobacco.
The rosewood veneer adds to the box's luxurious appeal, with its rich tones and intricate grain pattern. This piece is not only functional but also a testament to the 19th-century emphasis on craftsmanship and style, making it a striking addition to any collection or as a decorative accent.
