A decorated antique silver crucifix representing Christ on the cross likely dating from the nineteenth century, France. Note the four angels with rays of light behind them form a halo encircling Christ's head. A dove, the symbol for the Holy Spirit in Christianity, rets above another cherub angel in a cloud above his head. The inscription "INRI" at the top stems from the Latin phrase 'Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum' meaning 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'. In Christian religious tradition, this was the notice Pontius Pilate nailed over Jesus as he lay dying on the cross. This somber and hopeful piece would make a reverent statement adding a touch of religious history and French artisan craft to any space in your home.
