This handcrafted pottery jug is a classic example of an Orjol, a traditional jug used primarily in southwestern France for storing and serving liquids such as water, wine, or olive oil. Orjols were commonly found in rural households and are known for their robust and practical designs, often featuring a rounded body, sturdy handle, and a functional spout, just like the one seen here.

This particular Orjol from the early 20th century features a simple yet elegant design. Made from terracotta, it is only partially glazed in a soft honey-yellow tone on the upper portion, revealing the grey engobe beneath, which creates an elegant tricolor effect that sets this piece apart. The lower part of the jug remains unglazed, showcasing the natural clay texture, adding to its authentic rustic character.

The orjol was not just a practical household item but also a symbol of rural heritage in the south of France, where pottery making was a deeply rooted craft. The natural imperfections in the glaze and form are a testament to its handmade origins, making each piece unique. Today, its combination of glazed and raw surfaces makes it a striking decorative object, perfect for adding a touch of rustic elegance to any kitchen, dining area, or collection of traditional pottery.
