A lovely late 19th-century French confit pot, traditionally used in the South of France for preserving meats, particularly duck and goose, in a method known as "confit." Before refrigeration, confit pots were essential for food storage; meats were slow-cooked in their own fat, then packed into these pots and sealed with additional fat to keep them preserved and safe to eat over time. The glazed upper portion protected the contents from moisture, while the unglazed lower half allowed the pot to be buried in the cool earth, further aiding in preservation.
The pot is adorned with a warm, honey-toned glaze on the upper portion, which gradually gives way to the unglazed, natural terracotta on the lower half. Subtle crackling and areas of wear on the glaze enhance its authentic, aged character, while drips and irregularities in the hand-applied glaze add to its unique, handcrafted charm.
Fill it with fresh or dried flowers to create a stunning centerpiece for a dining table or sideboard. Learn more on our blog post about Antique French confit pots here.
