This antique engraving commemorates the devastating Plague of Marseille in 1720, one of the last major outbreaks of the bubonic plague in Western Europe. The scene depicts a grand ceremonial gathering set along a prominent boulevard in Marseille, flanked by elegant buildings. The detailed composition features numerous figures, suggesting a mix of civic solidarity and religious homage, while a celestial vignette above adds a divine element to the narrative.
The Plague of Marseille claimed nearly 100,000 lives in Marseille and the surrounding Provence region. It began when the ship Grand-Saint-Antoine arrived carrying infected goods, despite quarantine protocols. The city's resilience and recovery are symbolized in such commemorative works, honoring both the suffering and the incorruptible spirit of its residents.
The inscription at the bottom that reads:
"Dediée aux habitants de Marseille
Deversoix qui ont eux aussi accepté notre hommage
Copcris les siècles, Brillant d’âge en âge

"Dedicated to the residents of Marseille
Deversoix who have also accepted our homage
Throughout the centuries, Shining from age to age
