Dating from the nineteenth century, a lovely antique French silver three-arm bouillotte lamp topped with a red tole shade. The Bouillotte is a French card game that appeared in the eighteenth century and is based on three of a kind. It was very popular during the French Revolution and again for a few years beginning in 1830. Note how the pretty column-style molded base is fluted and the sides of the circular base lift up to create a bowl. The bowl-shaped base allowed players could place their pawns on it. Graceful molded acanthus leaves adorn each of the three arm branches.
Originally made for candles before electricity, it is now powered for European power. The shade height is adjustable in order to bring the shade up to the height of the burning candle by using the fletching (fin-shaped arrow's tail) and the top is elegantly finished with a molded finial. A delightful choice to accent a library or study workspace. Lightbulbs not included. Note any loose candle-style socket covers will be carefully packaged and can be straightened with care upon arrival.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
