This striking late 18th-century Normandy marriage box from Rouen is crafted from painted wood with a rich red background adorned with intricate floral motifs in greens, blues, and golds. Traditionally given as a wedding gift, this box symbolized love and prosperity, and was used to store a bride’s trousseau or personal treasures. The original iron lock and latch are still intact, adding to its historical value.
The box shows signs of age, including natural cracks in the wooden boards of the lid, paint chipping in areas, and typical wear from use, all of which enhance its authentic patina. The chain inside is a modern addition. Despite these signs of wear, this is an exceptional example of traditional Normandy craftsmanship.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
