THIS ITEM IS PART OF THE AT HOME WITH PATRICIA WELLS VOLUME II CATALOG. ALL ITEMS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE.

This set of six knife rests were probably made in Apt, Patricia recalls. They are in the shape of cicadas and finished with pretty green glaze. Patricia explains "I've just always loved details at the table - I love a theme - I love having my mushroom napkins with my mushroom knife rests. It's all part of the fun of embellishing the meal."

The cicada is deeply rooted in the culture and folklore of Provence, symbolizing the sun-drenched summers of the South of France. These insects, known for their distinctive and loud singing on hot summer days, are considered a symbol of endurance and survival, as they spend many years underground before emerging into the sunlight for a brief but vibrant life.

In Provence, cicadas are not only cherished for their song, which epitomizes the lazy, warm days of summer, but also for their symbolic meaning. They represent rebirth and immortality, echoing the region's enduring traditions and the timeless nature of its landscapes. This symbolism is so potent that cicadas often appear in local crafts, including pottery and textiles, serving as a popular motif that captures the essence of Provencal life.

Additionally, the cicada's song is believed to be a sign of good luck, and seeing one is considered an omen of good fortune. This belief further integrates the cicada into the cultural fabric of Provence, making its imagery and song a perennial reminder of the region's idyllic summers.
