This French ironstone jar was used for preserves. The lip at the top of the jar was for fastening a fabric cover. There is a maker’s mark reading ‘Creil et Montereau’ and a potter’s stamps reading 4 V. La faïence de Creil-Montereau is renowned for its exquisite stoneware. Light wear consistent with age and use.
