Dating from the nineteenth century, these four cooking bowls were made in the Mediterranean village of Vallauris. There are two large bowls and two small and they have yellow ocher glaze with some olive green tones. The curved handles are ribbed and in the shape of moustaches. These will make a lovely addition to a collection of antique French pottery.
Vallauris, a small town in southeastern France, boasts a rich pottery tradition dating back to the ancient Ligurians, continuing under Roman rule with utilitarian wares. The craft declined during the Middle Ages but resurged in the 16th century, becoming known for high-quality terracotta cookware by the 18th century. The Industrial Revolution introduced new techniques and glazes, enhancing its pottery's aesthetic appeal.
Vallauris experienced a significant revival post-World War II when Picasso settled there in 1948, attracting numerous artists and transforming it into a vibrant center for artistic pottery. Today, Vallauris remains renowned for its ceramic art, hosting workshops, galleries, and an annual Pottery Fair that celebrates its enduring legacy and contemporary innovations.
